Michael Polanyi, born Polányi Mihály, (11 March 1891, Vienna – 22 February 1976, Northampton) was a Hungarian-British polymath who made important theoretical contributions to physical chemistry, economics and philosophy. Member of the Royal Society elected 1944 and a Fellow of Merton College.
